Commissioned for the Olympic Sculpture Park, Mark Dion’s Neukom Vivarium is a hybrid work of sculpture, architecture, environmental education and horticulture that connects art and science. At the recent National Art Education Association (NAEA) convention, Dion joined a science teacher, a docent, an art historian and a SAM staff member in a panel discussion about the Neukom Vivarium. Each of these educators spoke about the complex and interdisciplinary ways that they use Mark Dion’s work with their students. How can the Neukom Vivarium connect to your student’s learning? Learn more here. | | | ARTS EDUCATION IN THE NEWS During the March 2011 National Art Education Association (NAEA) convention, over 3,000 educators from across the country came to think about and discuss teaching the visual arts. During this time Art21, a program by PBS, hosted a variety of events featuring art work found around Seattle. Check out this recent blog entry about their trip from New York to Seattle. And while you're at it, make sure you check out their top notch educational resources on teaching from contemporary art. | | | FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need to register in advance to bring my class to the Olympic Sculpture Park?
We HIGHLY recommend that you register your class with our Tour Coordinator before visiting the Olympic Sculpture Park (OSP). Although OSP is free to visit, there are some opportunities at the park that are only available to groups who register in advance. One of these opportunities is access to Mark Dion's work the Neukom Vivarium. The Neukom Vivarium is only able to be open to the public when a volunteer is staffed inside. With a few weeks' notice we can make sure there is a volunteer onsite when your school group visits. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the Neukom Vivarium will be open when unregistered school groups visit the park. To sign up, email schooltours@seattleartmuseum.org or call 206.654.3123. | | | NEED HELP GETTING HERE? Reduced School Program Fees
