FLESH and STONE

'Dear God! how beauty varies in nature and art. In a woman the flesh must be like marble; in a statue the marble must be like flesh.' Victor Hugo

Preserving moments in time, form and beauty is embodied within the hardy yet graceful stone, with Michelangelo once claiming his job was to free the human form trapped inside the block. From painting to sculpture the qualities lend themselves not only in form but within the natural texture and winding grain.

With Steve Lincoln Hubber's fluid and evocative sculpture of human form in 'Abstracted Male Torso - River God' we are presented with the subtle blend of Flesh and Stone, reminiscent of soft folds of fabric. Claire Burke's ambiguous paintings in silver leaf provide a coarse yet fragile approach to painting with connotation of aging and deterioration.

Victor Agius' 'Lovers II' demonstrates a fleshy form of abstraction. The mind plays with the flowing shapes that become two entwined figures, embodying relationships of the unknown shapes. In pieces such as 'Arty Flesh' Agius uses the power of the female form to produce a manic yet flirtacious painting, his use of colour seems to skillfully leap around the canvas.
