Oranges and Sunshine Friday 1 to Thursday 21 AprilOranges and Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson), a social worker from Nottingham, who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals in recent times: the organised deportation of children in care from the United Kingdom to Australia. Almost single-handedly, against overwhelming odds and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited hundreds of families, brought authorities in both countries to account and worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. With a wonderful performance from Emily Watson at its heart, this is a sensitive and extremely assured feature debut from Jim (son of Ken) Loach. Find out more and book online here. New Objectivity: Realism in Weimar Cinema Wednesday 13 April - Wednesday 13 JulyAlongside the National Galleries of Scotland's exhibition of August Sander's photography, Filmhouse presents an overview of verité cinema from Weimar Germany. GW Pabst was the foremost proponent of this central strand. We will screen several of his key works, including Joyless Street (1925), Threepenny Opera (1931), and his pacifist masterpiece Westfront 1918 (1930), as well as films by other leading realist filmmakers of the period. This vibrant chapter in German cinema came to an abrupt end with the rise of Nazism in the early thirties, but the films remain gripping today - a testament to the curiosity and innovation of these groundbreaking filmmakers. Find out more and book online here. Muppets™, Music & Magic: Jim Henson's Legacy Monday 18 - Thursday 28 AprilIn association with the Jim Henson Legacy Foundation and Brooklyn Academy of Music, Filmhouse is delighted to present an in-depth retrospective of work by Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, during the Easter holidays. In addition to many of Henson's feature films, the programme will include a wide-ranging look at his short films, rarities and world-famous TV shows. We are delighted to welcome producer Martin Baker, who worked with Jim Henson for 20 years, and who will present a guided tour of Henson's work. Find out more and book online here. Intermezzo Scottish Opera |
Scottish Opera's Intermezzo Festival Theatre Edinburgh Thursday 7 & Saturday 9 April, 7.15pm
Set in the 1920s, this comedy of manners captures the flaws and foibles of high society with Oscar Wilde-like wit, and no small hint of irony. The conductor Robert Storch and his wife Christine are not getting on. When Christine intercepts a love letter apparently addressed to her husband, she leaps to the obvious conclusion - but has she jumped the gun? Flirtations with penniless barons, confusingly similar names, the mysterious Mitzi Meyer... it all adds up to some stormy misunderstandings and more than a few mix ups. Intermezzo has the full, rich sounds of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier and Salome but captures an intimacy that is impossible in such larger works. This new production has been created by a team hand-picked by Scottish Opera's Music Director Francesco Corti, with leading German soprano Anita Bader, company favourite Roland Wood, and Scottish tenor Nicky Spence. Sung in German with English supertitles.
