Escape April showers and let your imagination blossom! With so much to see and do at the Museum this month, make us your source for creative inspiration. Presenting three contemporary exhibitions this spring, the Museum is bursting with captivating art and lively events.


Special Exhibitions

30 Americans
Through September 4
Meymandi Exhibition Gallery |Ticketed

Featuring 75 works of art, this sweeping display across a variety of media by some of the best contemporary artists explores how a previous generation of African American artists influenced those working today. Buy tickets online or call (919) 715-5923.

College students showing a current student ID see 30 Americans for free on Fridays from 5 to 9 pm.

Opening this Month
Alter Ego: A Decade of Work by Anthony Goicolea
April 17–July 24 | Free

Stimulate your imagination with art by contemporary artist Anthony Goicolea. Alter Ego presents 40 works by the Brooklyn, New York, artist, ranging from multimedia installations depicting fantastic worlds completely fabricated by the artist to portraits that feature his extended family.

Tour: 30 Americans Three Ways: The First 10
Wednesday, April 6 | 6:30 pm

Get to know the artists in 30 Americans. Curatorial Assistant Jennifer Dasal will introduce you to work by 10 artists featured in the exhibition in the first of three guided tours. Register online or call (919) 664-6754.

30 Americans College Night
Friday, April 8 | 7 pm | Free for students with current college ID

Filled with music, street performers, image slams, and activities inspired by the 30 Americans exhibition, the Museum turns into a vibrant city block for the first student-organized College Night.

Lecture: Photography as a Resistive Medium?

Sunday, April 10 | 2:30 pm | Free

Featured in 30 Americans, Hank Willis Thomas’s photography illuminates corporate America’s historical appropriation of “blackness.” Join the artist and his mother, photographer and art historian Dr. Deborah Willis, as they explore the roots of African American photography.

Meet the Artist: Anthony Goicolea
Friday, April 15 | 6:30 pm

Anthony Goicolea joins us for the opening celebration of Alter Ego, his first major museum exhibition. He’ll discuss the inspiration for the imaginary worlds he creates. A reception with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar follows. Register online.

Art Day
Saturday, April 16 | 10 am | Free

Bring your treasured works of art to the Museum on Art Day. Curators, conservators, and librarians team up to offer insight about your works and the artists who created them. Be sure to read our Art Day guidelines.


Invitational Poetry Slam

Saturday, April 30 | 2 pm | Free

North Carolina poet and playwright Dasan Ahanu hosts the Museum’s first spoken-word competition. We’re looking for experienced and new poets. Think you have what it takes? Apply to participate by April 21: send an e-mail or call (919) 664-6808.


Art of the Auction

Saturday, May 21 | 7 pm

Say Yes! to an exciting evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, and a high-energy afterparty—with all proceeds benefiting Museum exhibitions and education programs. On the auction block are exceptional works by artists from North Carolina and across the country. Buy your tickets online now!


Friday Nights

Admire the Museum at night—the galleries are open until 9 pm every Friday. 

West
Building | Art in the Evening
Fridays | 5:30–8 pm

Unwind with friends in a fun and sophisticated setting. Enjoy a glass of wine, small plates, and live music in the lobby-turned-lounge of the new West Building. Complete your evening with a walk through the galleries, dinner at Iris, or a classic film.

Spring Film Series
Fridays | 8 pm

Our cinematic celebration of creativity continues this month. Featuring painters, composers, musicians, and photographers, as well as their muses and collectors, our spring films are blossoming with artful inspirations. Movies include Downtown 81, Herb and Dorothy, (Untitled), and You’ll Find Out.

Hansel and Gretel with North Carolina Theatre for Young People
Saturday, April 9 | 11 am and 1 pm

Journey with two lost children who encounter a candy cottage deep in the woods in this Brothers Grimm classic tale brought to the stage.

Family Fun Saturday: Animals in Art
Saturday, April 16 | 10 am | Free

Our Saturday workshops are the perfect play date for the whole family! Explore different themes in art, and create projects together. To register call (919) 664-6785.

A Date with Egypt
Saturday, April 30 | 10 am | Free

Learn about ancient Egypt from a working archaeologist as she shares stories of her adventures. Enjoy hands-on activities and a tour led by an ancient Egyptian in this fun-filled and educational workshop.

Museum Tours

From family tours of the permanent collection to gallery talks about our special exhibitions, the Museum offers a variety of tours to suit many ages and interests. Check out the tours page for a complete listing.


30 Americans Group Tours

Bring your book club, coworkers, or group of friends to the Museum for a docent-led tour of the exhibition. Guided tours are free with admission. Call (919) 664–6785 for reservations.

30 Americans School Tours 

Students can learn about the exhibition through a teacher-guided or docent-guided tour. Groups of 10-60 students may visit 30 Americans free of charge with a reservation. Contact Jen Coon by e-mail or call (919) 664-6820.

Has the warmer weather put a little spring your step? The Museum Park's trails offer artful inspiration for a run, bike ride, or leisurely stroll.
