NEW YORK, NY.- Tonights Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale at Sothebys New York achieved $170,478,000, within the overall pre-sale estimate ($158.9/229.7 million). The auction was 74.6% sold by lot, and saw a total of 37 works sell for over $1 million. Pablo Picassos Femmes lisant (Deux personnages) was the top lot of the night, achieving $21,362,500, and auction records were established for the Surrealist artist Paul Delvaux and for a sculpture by Paul Gauguin. LONDON.- Sothebys presents the first of its 2011 London Sales of Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art. The auction will feature 343 lots and will take place in London on Wednesday, May 11th, 2011. Every item in the sale has been meticulously selected as an iconic example of its genre and in total the auction is expected to realise in excess of £11 million. The highlight of the auction is an important and rare 12th century Ice Crackle Guan vase of the Southern Song Dynasty. The vase, which was originally created for the Imperial Chinese court, formed part of the collection of Mr and Mrs Alfred Clark, who rank among the greatest English collectors of Chinese ceramics of the early 20th century. Bonn (Foundation for Art and Culture, Bonn), the Villa Schöningen presents in its spring exhibition a selection of early works by Andy Warhol. On view from May 3 to July 24, 2011, are drawings, collages and serigraphs from both the Marx Collection and from private collectors. The curators Aeneas and Heiner Bastian have brought together works dating largely from the 1950s, which are augmented by such famous motifs as "Campbells Soup Cans" or the "Cows". HELVOIRT.- Two important paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Jan Lievens exhibited at this years TEFAF Maastricht have been sold to private collectors who visited the worlds most influential art and antiques fair. The 2011 edition of The European Fine Art Fair was held in the city of Maastricht in the southern Netherlands from 18-27 March. A total of 260 of the worlds best art and antiques dealers exhibited at the Fair, which attracted more than 73,000 visitors from 55 countries. MEXICO CITY.- Archaeological pieces created more than 1000 years ago, found at the ancient city of Palenque, Chiapas, such as the tableau of the Temple of the Cross (Templo de la Cruz), the mask of the Red Queen (Reina Roja) and a group of figurines that represent members of the Palenque dynasty, have been restored or studied parting from their display at the exhibition Six Ancient Cities of Mesoamerica at the National Museum of Anthropology, already visited by 33,400 persons. WASHINGTON (AP).- When big news breaks, newspapers are a hot commodity despite the immediacy of online news. The website for the Newseum, a museum in Washington devoted to journalism, crashed Monday as thousands of people looked to see how newspapers around the world handled coverage of Osama bin Laden's death. The website posts digital replicas of front pages of hundreds of newspapers every day. Paul Sparrow, senior vice president of broadcasting at the Newseum, said the museum often sees demand for newspaper front pages spike when there are big stories in sports, entertainment or politics. ISTANBUL.- Bonnie Burnham, President of World Monuments Fund (WMF), today announced that WMF and the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism have embarked on a historic partnership to conserve the Ani Cathedral and the Church of the Holy Savior, in Ani, a medieval city in northeastern Turkey. Once the site of hundreds of religious buildings, palaces, fortifications, and other structures, Ani was, in the tenth century, one of the world's great cities. Today, however, it stands abandoned, and its celebrated historic buildings are in a precarious state. Finkelstein's father last saw him on April 28, 1945, when they were separated at Mathaussen Concentration Camp in Austria.
