The possessions we accumulate during a lifetime define us, whether their value is monetary or merely sentimental. What to do with another person's lifetime of objects after they are gone? This is a subject we will all contemplate sooner or later. Summer Hours, a warm and wise French film about families and the passing of time, will be introduced by one of its great admirers, local film critic Craig Lindsey.
Summer Hours
(2008) Written and directed by Olivier Assayas. Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling, Jérémie Renier, Edith Scob. (103 min.)
At Hélène’s 75th birthday party, far-flung family members gather at their beloved rustic country house for what may be the last time. They ponder sibling bonds—and some family heirlooms coveted by the Musée d’Orsay. “This bittersweet meditation ... is deeply nuanced and strikes just the right emotional notes” (USA Today). In French with English subtitles.
