In the Galleries

Frederick Carl Frieseke, The Garden Parasol, circa 1910Inspired by the serenity and splendor of a summer afternoon, American artist Frederick Carl Frieseke’s The Garden Parasol features the artist’s wife seated in her Giverny garden beneath a colorful parasol.

Frieseke’s emphasis on light marks him as a disciple of the impressionists, but unlike his European counterparts, he focused his attention on the female figure. His women were sensual and ornamental and engaged in polite, domestic pursuits.
